Mother Earth spoke this morning. It was the longest trembling of her soul that I have ever witnessed, felt, or heard—I am guessing it lasted for about 15 seconds.
It happened around 7:30 AM. I was just coming out of my slumber, laying in bed and greeting the morning, when a slight rattle of the window announced she was awakening, too. Soon, my second-floor residence began moving to her contractions. I stayed right there in bed, soaking in the moment and listening to her discourse.
Right away, I noticed the sounds and movements were entirely different this time. They were completely consistent—no stops and starts, no sudden peaks, and none of those sharp, sudden shocks. As I lay there observing the sheer length and magnitude of her rhythm, I entered the tabernacle of my heart and asked if I should move somewhere. Truthfully, I had no desire to get up. My higher self gently told me no, so I stayed put, inhaling the experience and marveling at the continuous wave of her movement, as I surrounded myself with light and love and radiating it outward.
An alarm eventually went off, and about five minutes after everything settled, I finally got up. There was an intense metallic smell hanging in the air of my apartment, which I imagine was caused by the friction of all the metal moving within the buildings. I started surmising the logistics of it: if the epicenter was right here or close to Medellín, it must have been between a 5 and a 6 on the Richter scale. If it was further away, like near Bogotá, then it was a truly massive contraction—likely a 7 or higher.
My building is around 40 years old, so it predates Colombia's modern anti-earthquake codes. It doesn't have the newer foundation designs integrated with seismic-resistant regulations that allow a structure to safely rock and absorb shockwaves. In buildings that do have these seismic-resistant features, it can feel a bit like the structure bends like bamboo on the higher floors instead of snapping like a rigid structure.
I know that feeling well, because exactly 10 years ago this month, I was on the eighth floor of a newer building. I was standing in the front, protruding living room on a bright, beautiful day just like today when Mother Earth had a very strong, 6.1 magnitude contraction.
The entire building swayed forward. It felt like the top floor where I stood was bending so far forward that I thought it might just snap and plunge. I stood perfectly still and said, "Father, here I am, do with me as you wish." In that space, I just kept connecting with Mother Earth's immense force and the language she was speaking, sending love and light wherever it was needed.
Facts of This Morning's Earthquake
The Magnitude: It was officially registered as a massive 7.4 magnitude earthquake. The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) emphasized that this is the strongest, highest-magnitude earthquake recorded in Colombia in the last 10 years.
The Time: It struck at 7:34 AM.
The Epicenter: It was located in San José del Palmar, Chocó (roughly 130–150 miles southwest of Medellín).
Depth & Aftershocks: It had a depth of about 82 kilometers. A significant aftershock of magnitude 4.8 hit shortly after at 8:18 AM.
Regional Impact: Cali and Manizales
Because Chocó (department) borders the Coffee Region and the Valle del Cauca (department), those areas were much closer to the energy release than Medellín or Bogotá (capital):
Manizales: This appears to be one of the hardest-hit cities; the intense shaking caused one of the towers of the famous neo-Gothic Cathedral Basilica to collapse onto its nave.
Pereira & Cali: Widespread structural damage, severe cracks in concrete, and partial building collapses have been reported across both cities.
Quibdó (Capital of Chocó): Being the closest major city to the epicenter, they are reporting significant structural failures and numerous injuries as emergency protocols are deployed.
My digital assistant, who arrived at 1:00 PM, informed me of the severity of this earthquake and shared that here in Medellín, the Metro was stopped for about four hours until a full inspection was completed and confirmed there were no issues.
I am well, and there are no cracks or visible signs of damage in my apartment.
